Gangrene overview
Gangrene refers to dead tissue as a result of critically reduced blood supply. The extent of gangrene depends upon the extent of arterial disease the patient has developed.
Symptoms of gangrene
Symptoms include loss of feeling of the affected area, skin numbness, inability to move the affected areas. Darkening of the skin and other color changes are observed.
What causes gangrene?
This is caused by a severe, chronic reduction of the blood supply to the involved extremity.
Gangrene diagnosis
An arteriogram is the diagnostic imaging modality of choice; it may be preceded by a vascular ultrasound examination.
Gangrene treatment
To prevent an acute severe infection, gangrenous tissue is amputated. Improving the blood supply to the affected extremity is indicated to prevent expansion of the gangrenous tissue; this is achieved with a catheter-based or surgical procedure.
