What is event monitoring?

An event monitor is a portable device that records the electrical activity of your heart when you experience symptoms. It captures the same data as an electrocardiogram (ECG), but over a longer period of time. The majority of these devices have the ability to send the collected data immediately to your healthcare physician. This enables him or her to examine your heart's electrical activity while you are experiencing symptoms.

Dr. Arthur Labovitz discusses what a Holter event monitor is and when it may be used.

What is Holter monitoring?

A Holter monitor and an event monitor are very similar devices. This is another another portable device that analyzes the signals of the heart. Holter monitors keep track of your heart rate for up to 48 hours. An event monitor does not continuously monitor your heart. Instead, it starts recording as soon as you turn it on. If an abnormal heart beat is identified, certain event monitors will begin recording automatically. Wearing event monitors for a month or more is possible.

What can you expect?

It simply takes a few minutes to set up the monitor, after which you may go about your daily routine.

You may be asked to write down any symptoms you have while wearing the monitor so that your heartbeat may be evaluated later.

After the procedure

Return the monitor to the technician at the end of the test period. He or she will analyze your cardiac activity data and write a report for your doctor. This includes the notes you keep in your journal. The results of the test should arrive in one or two weeks.
